Inspection Setup

  • NBI structure number *
  • Date of inspection *
  • Ambient temperature at time of inspection (deg F)
  • Is the bearing/joint layout plan referenced for member identification? *

Bearing Condition

  • Are elastomeric/pot/rocker/roller bearings free of excessive corrosion or section loss? *
  • Are bearings properly seated and free of tipping, walking, or misalignment beyond design tolerance? *
  • Do bearings show movement consistent with thermal position (not frozen or locked)? *
  • Are elastomeric bearing pads free of bulging, splitting, or delamination?
  • Are anchor bolts, masonry plates, and keeper assemblies intact and tight? *

Expansion Joint Condition

  • Are joint seals (strip, compression, finger, modular) intact and watertight? *
  • Is the measured joint gap within the expected range for the recorded temperature? *
  • Measured joint opening (inches)
  • Are joint armoring/nosing and anchorages free of cracking, spalling, or loosening? *
  • Is the joint free of debris packing that could restrict movement?

Related Distress & Drainage

  • Are bearing seats and pedestals free of water staining, spalling, or leakage from joints above? *
  • Is substructure below joints free of chloride-laden runoff damage?
  • Are drainage troughs/downspouts at joints functioning and unclogged?

Rating & Actions

  • Bearing element condition state (1-4 per AASHTO element inspection)
  • Joint element condition state (1-4)
  • Are follow-up maintenance or repair actions recommended? *
  • Notes and recommended actions
