Written Burn Plan & Authorization

  • Is a written prescribed fire burn plan prepared and approved by the responsible authority before ignition? *
  • Have required burn permits or authorizations been obtained from the state or local air/fire authority? *
  • Are the objectives of the burn (fuel reduction, ecological, site prep) clearly stated? *

Prescription & Weather

  • Are prescription parameters (temperature, relative humidity, wind speed/direction, fuel moisture) defined with acceptable ranges? *
  • Has a spot weather forecast been obtained and confirmed within prescription on burn day? *
  • Is a go/no-go checklist completed and documented immediately before ignition? *

Smoke Management

  • Has a smoke management assessment identified smoke-sensitive receptors (roads, airports, communities)? *
  • Are ventilation/dispersion conditions and mixing height evaluated to minimize smoke impacts? *
  • Is the burn registered with the state smoke management program where required?

Holding, Ignition & Personnel

  • Are firelines/control lines constructed and secured around the burn unit prior to ignition? *
  • Are the required number of qualified personnel and holding resources (water, equipment) on site? *
  • Is the ignition plan (pattern, sequence, devices) defined to keep fire behavior within prescription? *

Contingency & Documentation

  • Does the plan include contingency actions and identified contingency resources if the fire exceeds prescription? *
  • Are communications and notifications (dispatch, neighbors, agencies) established before ignition? *
  • Is mop-up and patrol conducted until the burn is declared out, with documentation retained? *
