Road Location & Design

  • Are roads located to follow contours and minimize the number of stream crossings and grade? *
  • Are road grades and drainage designed to prevent concentration and erosion of runoff? *
  • Are roads kept out of riparian management zones except at designated crossings? *

Road Drainage & Erosion Control

  • Are cross-drains, water bars, broad-based dips, or rolling dips installed at the required spacing? *
  • Is ditch and drainage outflow directed onto stable ground or into filter/buffer areas, not directly into streams? *
  • Are exposed cut-and-fill slopes and ditches stabilized (seeding, mulch, riprap) to control erosion? *

Stream Crossings

  • Are stream crossings (culverts, bridges, fords) sized to pass the design flood flow without blockage? *
  • Are crossings installed at right angles to the channel and aligned with the natural streambed? *
  • Do culverts maintain aquatic organism passage where required (embedment, slope, no perching)? *
  • Were required permits obtained for in-stream work (e.g., CWA Section 404 / 401)? *

Sediment Control & Maintenance

  • Are sediment barriers or filter strips installed between disturbed areas and waterbodies? *
  • Are stream crossing approaches surfaced or stabilized to reduce sediment delivery? *
  • Is a road maintenance and inactive-road closure plan in place to keep drainage functional? *
