Dust Hazard Analysis

  • Has a dust hazard analysis (DHA) been completed identifying fire, flash-fire, and explosion hazards throughout the facility? *
  • Are areas where combustible wood dust can accumulate or become airborne identified and assessed? *
  • Is the DHA reviewed and updated at the required interval or after process changes? *

Housekeeping & Dust Control

  • Is dust accumulation on floors, beams, ledges, and equipment kept below the threshold layer depth through a housekeeping program? *
  • Are dust collection systems designed, maintained, and operated to capture wood dust at the source? *
  • Is cleaning performed using methods that avoid creating dust clouds (no dry sweeping or blowdown that suspends dust)? *

Ignition Source Control

  • Is electrical equipment in dust-exposed areas rated and installed for the classified location? *
  • Is a hot-work permit program in place controlling welding and cutting near combustible dust? *
  • Are bearings, motors, and friction points inspected and maintained to prevent overheating ignition? *

Explosion & Fire Protection

  • Are dust collectors and enclosures protected by explosion venting, suppression, or isolation as determined by the DHA? *
  • Are spark detection and extinguishing systems provided on conveying systems where warranted? *
  • Is fire protection (sprinklers, extinguishers) provided and maintained appropriate to the mill hazards? *
