TED Installation & Configuration

  • Is an approved TED installed in each net rigged for fishing and capable of catching shrimp? *
  • Is the TED grid deflector bar spacing within the maximum allowed dimension? *
  • Is the grid installed at the approved angle relative to the net's normal horizontal plane? *
  • Is the escape opening dimension (single or double cover) compliant with the approved TED type? *

Escape Opening & Flap

  • Is the escape opening oriented correctly (top or bottom) for the TED type and fishery? *
  • If a flap/cover is used, does it meet the maximum length and attachment requirements without obstructing the opening? *
  • Are flotation and accelerator funnels (if used) configured per the approved design? *

Prohibited Modifications & Obstructions

  • Is the TED free of prohibited obstructions that could prevent turtles from escaping? *
  • Are webbing flaps, chafing gear, and floats confirmed not to block the escape opening? *
  • Is the try net (if used) within the allowed size to remain exempt from TED requirements? *

Documentation & Handling

  • Are crew trained to inspect TEDs and ensure they remain properly installed during fishing? *
  • Are sea turtle and smalltooth sawfish handling and resuscitation procedures posted and followed? *
  • Are any protected-species interactions recorded and reported as required? *
