Process Safety Information & Coverage

  • Does the ammonia refrigeration system contain a quantity of anhydrous ammonia at or above the 10,000 lb PSM threshold? *
  • Is complete process safety information maintained (P&IDs, equipment data, relief system design, ammonia SDS)? *
  • Has a process hazard analysis been completed and revalidated at least every five years? *
  • Are current written operating procedures available for normal, startup, shutdown, and emergency operations? *

Mechanical Integrity

  • Is a mechanical integrity program in place with inspection/testing on pressure vessels, piping, relief valves, and controls? *
  • Are pressure relief valves inspected and replaced at the manufacturer/IIAR recommended intervals? *
  • Is the system checked for corrosion, oil management, and refrigerant leaks? *
  • Date of the most recent mechanical integrity inspection. *

Detection, Ventilation & Alarms

  • Are ammonia detectors installed in machinery rooms and set to alarm and activate ventilation at required concentrations? *
  • Is emergency ventilation and the ammonia king/emergency shutoff functional and tested? *
  • Are eyewash/safety showers and appropriate PPE available near ammonia equipment? *

Emergency Response & RMP

  • Is an emergency action/response plan in place and coordinated with local responders (LEPC)? *
  • If covered, is a Risk Management Plan (RMP) developed and submitted to EPA with offsite consequence analysis? *
  • Are operators and responders trained on ammonia hazards and release response? *
  • Are incident investigations conducted and findings addressed for ammonia releases or near-misses? *
