Exposure Monitoring & Sampling

  • Are representative respirable crystalline silica exposure samples collected for each affected occupation? *
  • Is the permissible exposure limit of 50 µg/m³ (8-hour TWA) used as the compliance benchmark? *
  • When a sample meets or exceeds the action level of 25 µg/m³, is follow-up (periodic) monitoring conducted? *
  • Are miners promptly notified of their sampling results? *
  • Record the most recent 8-hour TWA silica result (µg/m³). *

Engineering & Administrative Controls

  • Are engineering controls (water sprays, dust collection, enclosed cabs, ventilation) used to reduce silica and respirable dust? *
  • Are controls maintained and their effectiveness verified where exposures exceed the PEL? *
  • Is a written exposure control plan in place identifying tasks and corresponding controls? *

Respiratory Protection

  • Where controls cannot reduce exposure to the PEL, are appropriate NIOSH-approved respirators provided? *
  • Are affected miners fit-tested and included in a written respiratory protection program? *
  • Are respirator cartridges/filters appropriate for respirable dust and maintained? *

Medical Surveillance & Records

  • Are periodic medical examinations (including chest X-ray and spirometry) offered to exposed miners at no cost? *
  • Are exposure monitoring and medical surveillance records retained for the required duration? *
  • Are corrective actions documented when overexposures are identified? *
