Principle 1: Sustainable Fish Stocks
- Is the target stock at or fluctuating around a level consistent with maximum sustainable yield (MSY)? *
- Is there a harvest strategy and well-defined harvest control rules responsive to stock status? *
- Is stock information and assessment adequate to determine status and support the harvest strategy? *
Principle 2: Minimising Environmental Impact
- Are impacts on primary and secondary species (retained and bycatch) understood and kept within sustainable limits? *
- Are impacts on Endangered, Threatened and Protected (ETP) species managed and within national/international limits? *
- Are impacts of the fishery on habitats and ecosystem structure and function assessed and minimized? *
Principle 3: Effective Management
- Does the fishery operate within an effective legal and/or customary framework consistent with MSC requirements? *
- Is there a fishery-specific management system with clear objectives, decision-making, and compliance/enforcement? *
- Is there a research plan and monitoring, control and surveillance to support ongoing management? *
Traceability Readiness
- Can certified catch be reliably segregated and identified at the point of landing and first sale? *
- Are systems in place to record catch by the units of certification eligible to carry the MSC claim? *
- Are points at which certified and non-certified catch could be mixed identified and controlled? *
