Plan Scope & Classification

  • Has the operation been classified for H2S hazard based on anticipated concentration and the radius of exposure calculation? *
  • Is a written H2S contingency plan available at the location and known to all personnel? *
  • Record the maximum anticipated H2S concentration for the formation (ppm). *
  • Are 100 ppm radius-of-exposure and public-area boundaries mapped relative to residences and roads? *

Detection & Monitoring

  • Are fixed and portable H2S monitors installed at drilling floor, shale shaker, and other high-risk points with audible/visual alarms? *
  • Are alarm set points established at 10 ppm (low) and 15-20 ppm (high) and functionally tested? *
  • Are wind socks or streamers positioned so wind direction is visible from all work areas? *

Protective Equipment & Training

  • Is positive-pressure supplied-air or SCBA respiratory protection available for the number of personnel on site? *
  • Have all personnel completed H2S awareness training within the required interval? *
  • Are safe briefing areas designated upwind with primary and secondary options for shifting wind? *

Ignition & Public Response

  • Are ignition procedures and criteria defined for igniting an uncontrolled H2S release to convert it to SO2 when warranted? *
  • Does the plan include public notification, road-block, and evacuation procedures coordinated with local authorities? *
  • Are emergency contact numbers and rally-point locations posted and current? *
