Hazard Assessment & Contingency Plan

  • Has the potential for H2S been evaluated for the operation based on reservoir data or offset well history? *
  • Is a written H2S contingency plan available on site that defines briefing areas, evacuation routes, and roles? *
  • Have wind-direction indicators (windsocks/streamers) been installed and are they visible from work areas? *
  • Are safe briefing areas established upwind and clearly identified? *

Detection & Monitoring

  • Are fixed and/or portable H2S monitors deployed at work locations and set to alarm at 10 ppm and 15/20 ppm? *
  • Are gas detection instruments bump-tested before use and calibrated on schedule? *
  • Is continuous atmospheric monitoring maintained during operations with H2S potential? *

Respiratory Protection & PPE

  • Is supplied-air or self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) available for all personnel who may be exposed? *
  • Are personnel using respirators enrolled in a respiratory protection program with fit testing and medical clearance? *
  • Is escape breathing apparatus staged at required locations for emergency egress? *

Training & Drills

  • Have all personnel completed H2S awareness training appropriate to their exposure potential? *
  • Are H2S drills conducted at the frequency required by the contingency plan and documented? *
  • Date of the most recent H2S drill. *

Emergency Response & Ignition

  • Are ignition and flaring procedures defined for uncontrolled H2S releases where warranted? *
  • Are rescue and first-aid procedures, including for a downed worker, defined and practiced? *
  • Are public protection measures (notification, road blocks, radius of exposure) defined for populated areas near the site?
