PPE & Training
- Are fallers and operators wearing required PPE including head, eye, hearing, leg (chaps), and foot protection? *
- Have employees been trained and evaluated for the specific work tasks and equipment they perform? *
- Is a first-aid kit available and are required employees trained in first aid/CPR? *
Chainsaw Condition & Handling
- Is the chainsaw equipped with a functional chain brake, throttle interlock, and chain catcher? *
- Is the saw started with the chain brake engaged or with the saw on the ground/firmly supported? *
- Is the saw shut off or the brake engaged when carried more than 50 feet or through hazardous terrain? *
Felling Technique & Escape
- Is the felling area assessed for hazards (lean, dead limbs, hang-ups, overhead power lines) before cutting? *
- Are proper undercut (face notch) and back cut with holding wood/hinge used to control tree fall? *
- Is an escape route cleared and used, and is the faller clear before the tree falls? *
- Are danger trees and hung-up trees identified and dealt with before other work proceeds? *
Mechanized Harvesting & Work Area Spacing
- Is the feller-buncher equipped with functional ROPS, FOPS, and operator protective structure? *
- Are employees kept out of the machine's operating zone (minimum two tree lengths from felling)? *
- Are pre-operational inspections of the harvester/feller-buncher performed each shift? *
- Is communication (signals/radio) maintained between ground workers and machine operators? *
