Pre-Departure Testing (within 12 hours)
- Was the steering gear tested within 12 hours before departure? *
- Was the main steering gear operated and the rudder moved through its full travel? *
- Was the auxiliary steering gear operated and the rudder moved through the required arc? *
- Were the rudder angle indicators checked against the actual rudder position? *
Power Units and Monitoring
- Were the steering gear power units and control systems, including remote control from the bridge, tested? *
- Were the power failure and low-level alarms for the steering gear confirmed operational? *
- Was communication between the bridge and the steering gear compartment tested? *
Changeover and Emergency Steering
- Are simple operating instructions with a block diagram showing changeover procedures posted on the bridge and in the steering compartment? *
- Are emergency steering drills conducted at least once every three months? *
- Are officers and crew concerned familiar with the changeover from remote to local (emergency) steering? *
Records
- Are the dates of the pre-departure checks and emergency steering drills recorded in the logbook? *
