SOLAS Navigation & Bridge Equipment Inspection

Position Fixing and Radar

  • Are the required radars (and ARPA where applicable) operational and correctly calibrated? *
  • Is a GNSS receiver or terrestrial position-fixing system operational and providing reliable positions? *
  • Is the Automatic Identification System (AIS) operating and transmitting correct static and voyage data? *

Heading, Speed and Steering

  • Is the gyro compass operational and the magnetic compass properly adjusted with a current deviation card? *
  • Is a speed and distance measuring device operational? *
  • Are steering gear systems, including alternative power and change-over, tested before departure? *

Charts, Publications and Voyage Planning

  • Are up-to-date nautical charts (paper or ECDIS with adequate backup) available for the intended voyage? *
  • Where ECDIS is the primary means, is an approved backup arrangement provided and are ENCs corrected? *
  • Is a berth-to-berth voyage/passage plan prepared and available on the bridge? *
  • Are required nautical publications (lights, tides, sailing directions, notices to mariners) available and current? *

Recording and Alarms

  • Is the Voyage Data Recorder (VDR/S-VDR) operational with a valid annual performance test certificate? *
  • Is the Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System (BNWAS) fitted, operational, and in use during watches? *
  • Is the echo sounder operational and providing reliable depth under keel? *

Signals and Communications

  • Are navigation lights, shapes, and sound signalling appliances operational per COLREGs? *
  • Is the GMDSS radio equipment for the sea area of operation operational with logged daily/weekly tests? *
  • Is the EPIRB registered, within its battery/hydrostatic-release service date, and correctly mounted for float-free release? *
