Plans, Placards and Records

  • Is an approved Garbage Management Plan on board covering collection, storage, processing, and disposal? *
  • Is the Garbage Record Book (or ship's official log for small ships) maintained with dated, categorized entries and Master's signatures? *
  • Are garbage placards posted notifying crew and passengers of the disposal requirements? *

Segregation and Storage

  • Is garbage segregated by the required categories (plastics, food waste, operational waste, e-waste, cooking oil, etc.)? *
  • Are storage receptacles adequate, marked, and secured to prevent accidental loss overboard? *
  • Is all plastic (including synthetic ropes, fishing gear, and plastic bags) retained on board for shore disposal? *

Discharge Compliance

  • Are discharges of food waste, comminuted or not, made only at the permitted distances from the nearest land? *
  • Are special-area and Polar-region restrictions understood and applied when operating in those areas? *
  • Are cargo residues and cleaning agents/additives assessed as harmful (HME) or not, and discharged accordingly? *

Reception Facility Disposal

  • Are garbage landings to port reception facilities supported by receipts retained with the Garbage Record Book? *
  • Enter the date of the most recent garbage landing ashore.
  • Where garbage is incinerated or processed on board, are the quantities and methods recorded in the Garbage Record Book? *
