Verifies the magnetic compass, its deviation card and adjustment, and steering gear testing and maintenance under SOLAS Chapters V and II-1.

Magnetic Compass
- Is a properly adjusted standard magnetic compass fitted and independent of any power supply? *
- Is a current deviation card available and consistent with recent azimuth/transit observations? *
- Is a means of taking bearings over 360 degrees (pelorus/bearing device) provided? *
- Is the compass adjustment record maintained and compass re-adjusted when deviations become excessive? *
Compass Backup and Transmission
- Where a gyro/transmitting heading device is fitted, is a transmitting magnetic heading device or spare compass provided? *
- Is the illumination and viewing arrangement (reflector/periscope) for the compass functional? *
Steering Gear Testing
- Are steering gear checks and tests carried out within 12 hours before departure? *
- Are the main and auxiliary steering gear, and hard-over to hard-over operation, tested? *
- Are the rudder-angle indicators, power-unit running indicators, and communications with the bridge checked? *
Emergency Steering and Maintenance
- Are emergency steering drills conducted at least every three months? *
- Are operating instructions and a changeover procedure block diagram posted at the steering position? *
- Is the steering gear hydraulic system free of leaks with correct oil level and functioning alarms? *
