Certificate of Fitness and Chapter 17

  • Is a valid International Certificate of Fitness for the Carriage of Dangerous Chemicals in Bulk held? *
  • Is each cargo listed in the Certificate of Fitness with its required carriage conditions? *
  • Are ship type and tank assignments appropriate for the hazard of each cargo? *

Cargo Compatibility and Containment

  • Is a cargo compatibility check completed for simultaneous cargoes and adjacent tanks? *
  • Are cargo tank materials and gaskets compatible with the cargoes carried? *
  • Are temperature, inhibitor, and inert/pad requirements met for reactive or self-reactive cargoes? *
  • Is the cargo tank venting system (P/V, high-velocity vents) operational and set correctly? *

Detection and Environmental Control

  • Is gas detection/vapour monitoring equipment calibrated and appropriate for the cargoes? *
  • Are cargo pump-room ventilation and bilge alarms functional? *
  • Is the cargo control/monitoring instrumentation (level, temperature, pressure) working? *

Personnel Protection and Emergency

  • Is protective equipment for each cargo (suits, respiratory, decontamination) available per requirements? *
  • Are safety showers, eyewash, and decontamination facilities operable? *
  • Are Material Safety Data Sheets and the Medical First Aid Guide (MFAG) available for the cargoes? *
  • Are crew familiar with emergency shutdown and cargo-spill response for the cargoes carried? *
