GMDSS Radio Installation Survey Readiness

Confirms GMDSS radio equipment, power supplies, and records meet SOLAS Chapter IV requirements for the ship's sea area of operation.

Radio Equipment by Sea Area

  • Is the GMDSS equipment fitted appropriate to the ship's declared sea area(s) of operation (A1/A2/A3/A4)? *
  • Are VHF, MF/HF DSC, and (where required) Inmarsat/recognised mobile satellite equipment operational? *
  • Is the NAVTEX and/or Enhanced Group Call (EGC) receiver receiving MSI correctly? *

Distress and Locating Devices

  • Is the satellite EPIRB correctly mounted, in date (battery/hydrostatic release), and registered? *
  • Are search and rescue locating devices (SART/AIS-SART) operational with in-date batteries? *
  • Are two-way VHF handheld radios for survival craft provided and functional? *

Power Supplies and Maintenance

  • Is the reserve source of energy (batteries) tested and able to power the installation for the required period? *
  • Are the means of ensuring availability (duplication, shore maintenance, or at-sea maintenance) satisfied? *
  • Is an alternative/emergency source of power and antenna arrangement available as required? *

Documentation and Operators

  • Is a valid radio licence, safety radio certificate, and the GMDSS radio log maintained? *
  • Are qualified GMDSS radio operators certificated and designated for distress communications? *
