Written Emergency Action Plan

Required elements of an EAP under 29 CFR 1910.38.

• Is there a written Emergency Action Plan available to employees (required if 11+ employees)? *
• Does the plan include procedures for reporting a fire or other emergency? *
• Does the plan include evacuation procedures and emergency escape route assignments? *
• Does the plan include procedures to account for all employees after evacuation? *

Alarm & Notification Systems

• Is an employee alarm system in place and distinctive for each purpose? *
• Is the alarm audible or visible above ambient noise/light levels throughout the workplace? *
• Are emergency contact numbers and the means of reporting emergencies posted? *

Evacuation Readiness

• Are evacuation route maps posted at conspicuous locations on each floor? *
• Are designated assembly/muster points established and communicated? *
• Are named individuals assigned to assist in a safe and orderly evacuation? *
• Are evacuation needs identified for employees with disabilities? *

Fire Prevention Controls

• Are flammable and combustible materials stored in approved containers and cabinets? *
• Are portable fire extinguishers of the correct class provided and within travel-distance limits? *
• Are ignition sources controlled and 'No Smoking' areas enforced where required? *
• Is sprinkler/standpipe access unobstructed with 18 inches clearance below sprinkler heads? *

Training & Drills

• Are employees trained on the EAP at initial assignment and when responsibilities change? *
