Reference Data & Requirements

  • Is a laboratory proctor (maximum dry density/optimum moisture) available for each fill material? *
  • Does the geotechnical report specify the required relative compaction and moisture range? *
  • Is the fill material classified and approved as suitable? *
  • Is special inspection of fill placement required and scheduled? *

Subgrade & Fill Placement

  • Has the subgrade been proof-rolled and unsuitable material removed? *
  • Is fill placed in lifts not exceeding the specified maximum thickness? *
  • Is moisture conditioning (wetting/drying) performed to reach optimum? *
  • Is appropriate compaction equipment used for the soil type? *

In-Place Density Testing

  • Is in-place density tested at the required frequency per lift and area? *
  • Is the nuclear gauge calibrated and standardized before testing? *
  • Does relative compaction meet the specified minimum (e.g., 90-95%)? *
  • Is in-place moisture content within the specified range of optimum? *
  • Are failing areas reworked and retested to passing? *

Documentation

  • Are test locations, elevations, and results logged with pass/fail? *
  • Are nonconforming areas and corrective actions recorded? *
  • Is a final compaction report signed by the geotechnical engineer? *
  • Photo of test location and compaction operation
